Fab maintenance & welding

In-port fabrication work is rarely “nice workshop welding”. It’s confined access, awkward geometry, weather exposure and short windows to complete safe, tidy repairs without disrupting berth operations. We provide rope access support for fabrication maintenance and welding activities alongside, helping you reach high-level steelwork, remove obstructions, prepare interfaces and complete repair scopes efficiently within a controlled system of work.

rope access Fab maintenance & welding

Practical in-port fabrication support for awkward access areas.

Fabric maintenance is more than repainting — it’s finding what’s degrading first and fixing it properly. We provide rope access support for minor steelwork repairs, bracket and plate renewals, and controlled welding tasks in awkward locations such as handrails, walkways, under-decks, splash zones and access steel. Defects are identified, priorities agreed, then repairs completed in a planned sequence so structures remain safe, compliant and serviceable with minimal disruption to operations.

Marine and dockside steelwork takes a constant beating — vibration, impacts, salt exposure and repeated loading all contribute to fatigue and corrosion around details. The work is often concentrated at the hardest points to reach: brackets and supports, handrail lines, ladder runs, platform edges, stiffeners and interface steel around cranes, davits, funnels and access towers.

Our role is to provide safe access and controlled positioning so repair work can be carried out properly. We support fabrication and welding scopes by enabling close access for inspection and prep, assisting with removal/reinstatement of secondary items as agreed, and helping teams work methodically through repair priorities. Where a welding contractor or coded welder is required, we coordinate the access, protection measures and work sequence so the repair can be completed without unnecessary delays or overbuild of temporary access.

The outcome is a practical repair package: safe access, sensible coordination around permits and live operations, and a clear close-out record of what was completed and what should be monitored next.

Typical tasks

  • Access support for repair preparation: close inspection, marking, measurements and scope definition
  • Assisting with removal/reinstatement of secondary steelwork, guards, brackets and fittings (as agreed)
  • Access support around cutting/welding workfronts (hot work controls and protection measures)
  • Repairs to ladders, platforms, handrails, gates and landings (scope-dependent)
  • Localised steelwork reinstatement around corroded or damaged details (as specified)
  • Snag/defect close-out during port windows with photo-backed records
  • Post-repair verification checks and handover notes

Assets & locations

  • Vessels alongside: superstructure steel, access routes, platforms and high-level fixtures
  • Port infrastructure: access towers, walkways, ladders, landings and secondary steelwork
  • Funnels, casings and associated support steelwork (as scoped)
  • Crane/derrick adjacent access steel and guards (access support)
  • Tight berth environments where scaffold is disruptive or impractical
  • Coastal structures exposed to heavy weathering and repeated impacts

Planning, safety & control

Fabrication and welding support is planned around permits, SIMOPS and hot work controls. We agree workfront boundaries, exclusion zones, fire watch arrangements (where required by the site), and practical protection to prevent sparks/debris affecting adjacent operations. Rope access is delivered as a complete system with two-rope protection and a workable rescue plan, and tool control is kept disciplined so the work area below remains protected. The job is coordinated so repairs progress without creating disruption across the berth or maintenance programme.

Arrange in-port fabrication and repair access support

If you have steelwork repairs or fabrication maintenance scopes that are being held up by access constraints, we can support with a controlled rope access plan alongside your permits and operational requirements. Share the asset type, repair priorities, working heights, hot-work interfaces and programme window — and we’ll propose a practical approach that keeps the job moving.
