Structural & Plant Decommissioning Support

Decommissioning at height is rarely “just removal” — it’s access constraints, live interfaces, permits, lifting plans, hot-work controls and a programme that can’t afford delays. We provide rope access decommissioning support for industrial structures and plant, helping teams access, isolate, strip out and make-safe high-level assets efficiently, without turning the workfront into a scaffolding project. Rope access is valued for safe, rapid access with minimal impact on surrounding operations.

rope access Structural & Plant Decommissioning Support

Controlled access and practical support for decommissioning at height.

When plant is being stripped out or reconfigured, we provide rope access support to deal with the awkward high-level items — redundant steelwork, platforms, ladders, pipework supports and cable containment. We help with safe disconnection, local cutting and controlled lowering, backed up by close visual checks so remaining structures stay stable and the area is left tidy and ready for the next phase.

Decommissioning work succeeds when the sequence is planned and the interfaces are controlled. Steelwork and plant are often removed in stages: verify isolation status, gain close access, identify connections and fixings, prepare drop zones and lift routes, then strip out or make-safe systematically so the next trade can move in without surprises. Our role is to provide safe work positioning and disciplined site controls so those stages can happen efficiently at height and in awkward locations.
We support decommissioning programmes by giving teams close access to remove redundant secondary steelwork, platforms, ladders, brackets, pipe supports, cable tray runs and ancillary plant items within the agreed scope. Where cutting or lifting operations are involved, we coordinate with your permit office and lifting team so exclusion zones, communications and sequencing remain clear. We also provide practical reporting and tagging/marking support so components, interfaces and remaining defects are easy to identify during close-out.
Rope access is delivered as a complete system of work, planned and supervised correctly, with rescue arrangements built in from the outset in line with IRATA’s approach.

Typical tasks

  • High-level access for isolation verification support and interface checks (site-rule dependent)
  • Strip-out and removal support for redundant items: cable trays, brackets, supports, guards and secondary steelwork
  • Access support around lifts: preparing connection points, removing obstructions, clearing routes and completing pre-lift checks (as agreed)
  • Controlled dismantling support on platforms, stair towers, gantries and service runs (within scope and method)
  • Preparation works prior to fabrication/repair teams (making access possible, removing cladding/obstructions where required)
  • Defect capture, photo records and close-out notes to support decommissioning documentation
  • Final snag clearance and “make-safe” actions prior to handover

Assets & locations

  • Industrial structures: gantries, pipe racks, towers, access stairways and platforms
  • Plant items and ancillary equipment at height (fans, duct sections, housings, supports)
  • Redundant service runs: cable trays, small-bore pipework supports and bracketry
  • Roof-level plant zones and restricted-access elevations
  • Shutdown and refurbishment environments with multiple contractors and SIMOPS
  • Ports, utilities and heavy industrial sites where access footprint must be kept tight

Planning, permits & safety

Decommissioning support is delivered under task-specific RAMS and permit controls, with practical exclusion zones, disciplined tool control and clear interface management around lifting and hot-work activities. Rope access is planned and executed in line with IRATA good practice (including double-rope protection and a workable rescue plan), and the set-up is adjusted as workfronts change. We coordinate sequencing with your supervisor/permit office so isolations, stop-work triggers and handovers remain clear, and we provide a clean close-out record of what was accessed, what was removed/made-safe, and what remains for follow-on trades.

Arrange rope access decommissioning support

If you have a decommissioning or strip-out programme that includes high-level structures or awkward plant areas, we can support with controlled rope access delivery integrated with your permits and site constraints. Provide the asset type, work scope, interfaces (lifting/hot-work/SIMOPS), and programme window — and we’ll propose a practical access and sequencing approach that helps the job move.
