Emergency & Rescue Call Out

When a confined space job changes unexpectedly — loss of ventilation, abnormal gas readings, water ingress, an immobilised entrant, or an “unknown condition” report — the priority is to regain control without creating a second incident. Raven Rope Access provides confined space emergency response and rescue support, mobilising competent personnel, monitoring and rescue equipment to help stabilise the situation, support the site controller, and recover a casualty where required under a safe system of work. HSE guidance requires adequate emergency arrangements for confined space work rather than relying on the emergency services alone.

rope access Emergency & Rescue Call Out

Controlled emergency response for confined space incidents and urgent access.

When something stops production or creates an immediate safety concern, you need rapid access and clear decisions. We respond to urgent issues in tanks, vessels, culverts, shafts and plant areas where entry is restricted or higher risk — including suspected gas problems, water ingress, blockages, damaged internals, or failed access systems. The focus is fast assessment, safe stabilisation and practical recommendations so the next steps are clear.

Emergency call-outs are rarely one clean problem. They often involve time pressure, incomplete information, live interfaces and conditions that may change quickly. Our first objective is to establish facts and stabilise risk: confirm isolation status and access constraints, assess atmospheric conditions, set practical surface controls, and align communications with the permit holder / incident lead. Where entry is required, it is only undertaken with a defined objective, controlled monitoring/ventilation where appropriate, and emergency arrangements matched to the space configuration and hazards.
We can support emergency rescue and recovery in line with recognised confined space role structures (including entry controller/top person and emergency rescue/recovery functions referenced within City & Guilds confined space qualifications). The outcome is a clean, practical handover: what conditions were found, what actions were taken, what remains live, and what should be done next by day shift or specialist repair teams.

Typical call-outs we support

  • Abnormal gas readings, suspected contamination or unstable atmospheres
  • Water ingress / rising levels affecting safe entry or egress
  • Entrant retrieval support and rescue standby where a casualty recovery plan is required
  • Failed access/egress equipment (ladders, fixed points, hatches) affecting safe exit
  • Urgent internal condition checks to confirm damage, blockage or failure point
  • Stabilisation actions (as agreed): securing loose items, making-safe, short-term controls
  • Photo-backed findings and clear close-out notes for maintenance planning

Assets & locations

  • Tanks, vessels, pits and sumps (subject to contents controls)
  • Pump stations, wet wells and chambers
  • Sewers, manholes, culverts and utility shafts
  • Silos, hoppers, bunkers and transfer chutes
  • Service tunnels, ducting runs and restricted plant voids
  • Shutdown/turnaround areas with multiple permits and live interfaces

Planning, permits & safety

Emergency work is controlled through the same fundamentals every time: verified isolations, defined roles at the entry controller/top person position, effective communications, appropriate atmospheric testing and monitoring, and emergency arrangements that match the space depth, route and hazards. HSE guidance under the Confined Spaces Regulations is clear that adequate emergency arrangements must be in place for confined space work, and that reliance on the emergency services alone is not sufficient. We integrate with your PTW system where active (or establish structured controls where appropriate), maintain practical exclusion zones, and keep decisions evidence-led so recovery or make-safe actions remain defensible.

Request confined space emergency response support

If you have a confined space incident or an urgent access problem that needs competent support, we can mobilise to assist site control with monitoring, ventilation and rescue capability as required. Provide the site location, space type, current status (entry in progress / stopped), known hazards/contents history, and your permit or incident point of contact — and we’ll advise the immediate next steps and deploy appropriately.
